The Neon Tetra is a very popular aquarium fish. It is a schooling fish, so keep at least 6, preferably more. Their tank mates should be other peaceful and small fish. They are suitable for small tanks (recommended minimum size: 24 inches / 60 cm long side for a small group). The Neon Tetra can live 10 years or more with the proper conditions.
Description
A small and slim fish with red and blue stripes. The red stipe runs from the middle of the body to the caudal fin and blue stipe starts from nose and extends to the adipose fin. Females are plumper than males.
Natural Habitat
They are native to the South America; Brazil, Peru, Colombia. The rivers are full of leaves and woods, making the water very soft and acidic. The rivers are clearwater or blackwater.
Tank Setup
They like a planted aquarium and a dark gravel substrate. The water should be soft, slightly acidic and clean.
Feeding
They will eat all kind of food: live, dried or frozen.
Breeding
The Neon Tetras are egg layers. Breeding them can be difficult in the home aquarium. Water conditions are very important: soft, acidic and very clean, with a temperature not higher than 75 F (24 C). The eggs are light sensitive.
